Balboa City School will once again be offering summer programs for both the lower division (grades K-8) and the upper division (grades 9-12). All students benefit from something to do over the summer. This structured day program offers them the opportunity to continue to make progress at a time when they might otherwise slip behind. Our warm, personal environment assures success and fosters mastery for a broad range of ability levels. No homework is assigned.

• Upper Division (grades 9-12)
A lot can be accomplished at our WASC accredited summer program. Students can earn a full year of credit in English and/or mathematics. Or, as is the case with most students, they can improve their grades and significantly improve their chances of going to college. BCS offers excellent instruction, no homework (in the summer only) and a variety of important classes from Calculus to English Literature.
Students can learn Shakespeare the way he was meant to be learned: by going to plays at the Old Globe, studying the plays in depth, meeting the actors and directors, and touring a replica of the exact stage where Shakespeare enacted his famous dramas during the Elizabethan era.
Students can also develop sophisticated test taking skills and content knowledge for standardized tests such as the SAT and the ACT.
In addition, we look forward to many students attending our summer school to further enhance and reinforce their academic skills before they go back to their year-round program. Students will start out the school year of 2008 – 2009 having forgotten virtually nothing. That’s because instead of a twelve week gap between the school years, there will be only a four-week gap. This will still give your child all of August to enjoy the summer. And during our summer school, students will still have their afternoons free (from 12:00 on).
Finally, summer school students have the opportunity to apply for paid and non-paid positions through our intern program, which is supported by the La Jolla Learning Foundation.
Frankly, summer school is often the key to continued academic success at BCS. It is a crucial lynch pin in solidifying student accomplishment and moving forward with confidence into the new year.
These are just a few of the reasons to attend summer school. I have not included all of our electives for the sake of brevity. We appreciate all your support and will continue in our endeavors to improve our academic excellence.
