Balboa School is Partnering with MC Speech to Provide the Public Speaking After School Program.
Introducing MC Speech!
MC Speech is an elite teaching and tutoring company that offers courses in public speaking, speech, debate, and mock trial to middle and high schools throughout Southern California. Our students learn to become world-class communicators through a combination of instruction, exercises, and personalized feedback. In each class, students engage in interactive lectures and demonstrations with their instructor, after which they apply the lesson themselves by practicing new techniques with personalized guidance. Students are given an assignment to complete each week; they practice at home before delivering in front of the class and receiving verbal and written feedback on their performance.
MC Speech boasts an elite roster of instructors who have earned competitive public speaking awards at the high school, college, and law school level and who possess decades of combined public speaking and teaching experience between them. MC Speech’s instructors have taught throughout California and nationally, including at the acclaimed BASIS Independent and Challenger Schools in Silicon Valley, Good Shepherd Catholic School in Beverly Hills, All Souls World Language School in Alhambra, Holy Family Catholic School in South Pasadena, and now here at the Balboa School in San Diego.
Intro to Public Speaking Course (Middle School Level)
Over an eight-week session, middle school students gain confidence speaking in front of an audience and learn fundamental public speaking principles. Students deliver a new speech each week and receive tailored feedback. The course curriculum includes topics such as projection, articulation, gestures, argumentation, improvisation, and more. Students practice and deliver tongue twisters, poetry, historical speeches, and even speeches that they have authored in class. This class teaches general presentation and critical thinking skills and lays a foundation for presenting to any audience, including in more advanced classes like competitive speech, debate, and mock trial.
Intro to Interviewing and Debate (High School Level)
In this eight-week course, high school students receive focused training on how to excel in both college admissions interviews and job interviews. Students learn effective communication techniques, develop strategies to address common interview challenges, and practice repeatedly until a formal interview becomes just as comfortable as a friendly conversation. Following this interview training, students receive additional training in critical thinking and debate, complementary areas of instruction that assist students in thinking on their feet in any public speaking setting. The curriculum covers concepts of effective presentation, argumentation, research, logic, and improvisation. This course also lays a foundation for more advanced classes covering additional speech and debate events, including persuasive, limited preparation, and dramatic speech events, parliamentary and Lincoln Douglas debate, and mock trial.
Join our Elite Mandarin Program at Balboa School!
We use a well-implemented Academic and Activity based curriculum.
We use a well-implemented Academic and Activity-based curriculum. For non-Chinese heritage students, we use materials, “Step by Step Chinese Proficiency”, which are professionally designed by All About Mandarin curriculum team and had been practiced in many schools, to enhance students’ proficiency of Mandarin (Chinese) as a foreign language. For Chinese heritage students, we use the materials based on the books that are currently being taught in elementary schools in China (中国小学语文教材). This program not only provides structural academic learning, but also engages students’ interests in learning Chinese.
